Elm grew up in a nomadic tribe of Motavian natives that, during their travels, have covered every centimeter of Mota's desert. From a young age, Elm was regarded with scorn by many of his peers for his unusually dark fur, which to many Motavians signified demonic tendencies. Always fascinated by plants and animals, Elm left his tribe at fourteen and made his way to Piata, where he was, after much struggle, able to enroll at Motavia Academy. Eventually he made his way to Dezo and began studying that planet's indigenous lifeforms. During his fifth year on Dezo, Elm met the scientist Tirotul Urbanich, and the two quickly became good friends.
