Magic, Techniques, and Skills
There is much confusion as to the distinction between magic spells, techniques, and skills. We know that they are different, because a distinction has been made between them. However, the basis for this distinction is never explained.
Magic, in my opinion, is something that is simply beyond our comprehension. One might call it mysticism, or spiritual power, or something else entirely. Whatever it may be, it is something that the human mind cannot fully grasp. (But maybe the Esper mind can!)
I believe that techniques are manifestations of telekinesis that mimic the effects of magic. Simply put, technique users are manipulating their environment using the power of the mind. "Teke" allows one to harness the power of the wind (Zan), or warp the force of gravity in a certain area (Gra), channel a bolt of lightning (Tsu), energize the body's natural immune systems (Res), or do any number of other things.
Skills are something entirely different, and cannot be so easily classified. There are many different types of skills, and each type is very different from the others. However, I believe that every skill can be placed into one or more of the following categories.
A skill is a technique-like ability that:
- was developed by and is unique to one individual.
- involves the use of a particular weapon.
- is not a "true technique" for some reason.
- uses machinery instead of telekinesis.
It should also be noted that all magic spells in Phantasy Star IV are classified as skills as well.
