Why Alys Brangwin Is Not Alis Landale
For as long as I have been involved with the Phantasy Star Internet fandom, there have been people who have believed that Alys Brangwin is the "reincarnation" of Alis Landale. And I must admit, when I first played Phantasy Star IV I kept expecting some connection to be established between the two women. However, never was any clear connection established between them, and I do not believe that there is sufficient evidence to support the idea that any sort of connection exists. In fact, I believe the existing evidence supports the exact opposite opinion.
Consider:
- If Alys is Alis, then why does no character ever mention it, or even suggest it as a possibility?
- The two look nothing alike. They wear similar outfits and both have long brown hair, but that is where the resemblances end. Their two heads of brown hair aren't even of same shade. Alis' hair is closer to a dark blonde.
- The two have almost completely different personalities. Both are very strong, but Alis has none of Alys' cutting wit and sarcasm. Alys is a professional; Alis is the epitome of the amateur. Alys is a glutton for excitement. Alis is a reluctant hero.
- I believe that the Japanese and American Phantasy Star sagas are completely independent of one another, but for those who do not, there remains the fact that no connection between Alys and Alis was established in the Japanese Phantasy Star IV, either. In fact, the character we know as Alys had a name that bore no resemblance whatsoever to the name "Alis."
- If Alys is Alis, then when she appeared to Chaz during the Elsydeon sequence, why in the world did she appear to Chaz in her Alis form and not her more familiar Alys form? And, most importantly, why didn't she say to Chaz something along the lines of "It's me, Alys! I'm alive! I'm okay!" Think of how effective it would have been for Alys to say during the Elsydeon sequence, "Chaz, you've grown into a fine man. I am so very proud of you. By the way...your swing is still too slow!" There wouldn't have been a dry eye in the house!
Although this is a matter of opinion, I personally think that the evidence speaks for itself. I cannot see how Alys Brangwin could possibly be Alis Landale.
